Our gluten free Saffins are among our most popular varieties and that's because they're made with incredibly tasty ingredients, they just happen to be gluten-free.
According to Coeliac UK, (www.coeliac.org.uk) the national charity for people with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), 1 in 100 people in the UK are affected by the disease, yet only 10% - 15% of those with the condition have received a diagnosis. If you know you have this lifelong, serious autoimmune disease caused by the immune system reacting to gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley and rye), you'll know that the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life. We understand how important this is and want you to be completely safe when choosing what to eat. All the ingredients we use for our gluten free varieties are to our knowledge genuinely gluten-free and we do all we can to avoid cross-contamination, however our kitchen is not exclusively gluten free and we want you to be aware of this if your gluten intolerance is severe.
A gluten-free diet is also sought by many who aren't necessarily gluten intolerance, yet find that they feel better in themselves eating less gluten, or avoiding it altogether. It's a choice which we respect and are delighted to have created a range that satisfies all tastes, needs and preferences.
Fresh and frozen vegetables, olive oil, rapeseed and vegetable oils, (most) cheeses, meats and eggs are naturally gluten free as are whole herbs and spices. The ingredients we suggest avoiding if coeliac, or severely gluten intolerant are blue stilton (our Broccoli & Stilton Saffin) and red wine (our Mushroom Saffin) and that's only because we can't verify that these 2 ingredients are 100% gluten free.
Our flour of choice for all but two of our gluten free varieties is chick pea flour. Not only is it naturally gluten free, it is also high in protein, iron and fibre and it's exceptionally flavoursome and the reason why our gluten free Saffins are so very tasty. For the two varieties that we don't use chick pea flour we use gluten free flour and gluten free baking powder.
